- Introduction
-
- On the continent of Rastika, in the country of Zala, there lies the city
- of Zulula. A rich, prosperous city since the end of the Great War Of
- Freedom, Zulula is a place of both good and evil, law and chaos. Each year,
- people from Koros, Shakiri and even the realm of Intisgurb come to Zulula to
- participate in the greatest tournament of all, the tournament of Zulula.
-
- The tournament of Zulula is an action-packed arcade game featuring
- multiple player character races (including odd creatures), single competition
- or tournament. It only supports CGA graphics and IBM sounds (future versions
- of the game may support EGA/VGA and AdLib).
-
- Installing the game
-
- This game sould include: INSTALL.BAT, READ.ME and FILES.EXE. FILES.EXE
- is a self-extracting file. Here is how you install the game. Type INSTALL
- [drive] at the dos prompt (Example: INSTALL c). The program will create
- three sub-directories: [drive]:\ZULULA, [drive]:\ZULULA\LICONS, and
- [drive]:\ZULULA\RICONS. The program will then unpack all the files in their
- appropriate directory. DO NOT TRY TO PUT THEM IN ANOTHER DIRECTORY i.e.
- C:\GAMES\ZULULA, the game may not work. The game will fit on 1 720k disk or
- hard disk. A file named ZULULA.ICO (in FILES.EXE) is an icon for windows
- users.
-
- Starting the game
-
- To start the game, go to your ZULULA directory and type ZULULA. After the
- title screen you will be asked to calibrate your joystick(s). If you do not
- have a joystick, press ESC twice to skip those screens.
-
- Once this is done, you will arrive at the gates of Zulula. The guards
- are pretty nasty, and to enter you will have to accomplish an errand for
- them. If you have not registered, you will probably be unable to accomplish
- this errand, and thus, you will go to a limited version of the game.
-
- If you have registered and have the list of drinks, simply find the bar
- that serves the drink the guard asks you for, go to that bar (using the
- keypad), and press enter. Once in the bar, the bartender will ask you how
- full you want your drink. Find the name of the creature the drink is
- destined to, and fill the drink the number written beside this creature.
- Once this is done, the guard will get the drink, give it to the recipient,
- whom will drink it. If you have made a mistake, you will go to a limited
- version of the tournament.
- The Main Menu
-
- The main menu consists of four choices: Single Duel, The Tournament, Set
- the players, or see the strengths and weaknesses of the different races. The
- Tournament option might be shaded if you failed to accomplish the guard's
- errand. On the left and right of the screen there are to characters walking.
- Those represents the current choices the players are.
-
- When chosing a single duel, the two players selected in the Set Players
- menu will duel one against another. See playing the game for more info.
-
- Duels are fun, but nothing compares to the excitement of the tournament!
- When chosing tournament, you will start the tournament of Zulula. In the
- tournament, the two players setted in the Set Players option will compete in
- the tournament, as well as 6 other players (controlled by the computer). You
- will first be asked is you want to see computer-controlled fights (fights
- that features a computer-controlled opponent against another
- computer-controlled opponent). You can choose to see all those fights, none
- or those fights, or only some of those fights. When you choose "Asks you
- each time", each time a computer vs. computer fight is about to append, the
- computer will ask you if you wish to see that fight. Only press Y or N in
- that case. Once the tournament has begun, you will see player 1 on top of
- the chart and player 2 at the bottom. The other slots will be filled with
- the other contestants. The tournament consists of 7 duels. The winner of
- the tournament will receive the immensely beautiful and so desired trophy
- representing the founder of the town: Geoffrey Zulula.
-
- When choosing Set Players, you will go to a separate screen where you
- can select the race, name, and input mode for the two players. Use the
- arrow key to move from field to field and ENTER to change the current
- selection. When pressing ENTER to change a name, you will be prompted to
- enter the new name for that player.
-
- When choosing Races Info, you will go to a separate screen where every
- races' stats are showed, two races at a time. You can change the races by
- pressing PgUp or PgDn. ST stands for strength, the stronger the race, the
- harder it will hit. DX stands for dexterity, the more dextruous the race,
- the faster it will hit. HM is the life force of the character, when a
- character is hit, it will lose life force. RF stands for regeneration
- factor, the less the number, the more the creature will be able to regenerate
- its life force. Finally, IN stands for intelligence, it can be Dumb, Low,
- Medium, and high. One characteristic is not displayed there, that is the
- reach. See races info in this document to know more about that.
-
- Playing the game
-
- When a duel occurs (be it single or part of the tournament), the
- computer will first introduce the two characters competing in this fight.
- Then, it will switch to the combat screen.
-
- On the combat screen, the two bars on top of the screen represent the
- life force of both the contestants. The left one being for the left
- character, and the right one for the right character. In the middle of the
- screen is the scenery area. The scenery displayed depends on the duel's
- importance. Single duels are fought in the caverns outside the mountain ring
- surrounding Zulula, the first tournament rounds will be fought outside the
- moutain ring surrounding Zulula, near the active volcano Kalaza. The
- semi-finals will be fought inside the ring of mountain, in front of the
- Castle of the Giants. And the final fight will be held inside the Castle of
- the Giants. The fight then begins...
-
- Use the joystick or keypad to move your character on the screen. The
- first button (or INS) is used to hit and the second button (or ENTER) to put
- the character in defensive position. Moving the joystick up or pressing the
- upper keys of the keypad will cause the character to jump.
-
- When using the keyboard, remember this. once you press a direction key
- and the shield key, the character will do as ordered until another key is
- pressed. Example: Suppose you are playing a human, if you press 6 (or ยป),
- the character will move right until another key is pressed (pressing 6 again
- will stop the character). In the same fashion, pressing ENTER will cause the
- human to use its shield and keep it until another key is pressed. Keeping a
- key pressed will not be of any good.
-
- Being hit causes you to lose life force. You will lose less life force
- if you are in defensive position when hit. Attacking will also make you lose
- life force (tough only a little). Doing nothing, or simply moving, will
- cause your character to regenerate its life force at a variable speed (see
- races info).
-
- When a character's life force extinguishes, the character will
- extinguishes as well, being out of life force. When a character dies, the
- other is declared the winner and will certainly give some comments to the
- press!
-
- If you decide to quit the duel, by pressing ESC, three situation can
- occur: If the two characters are players (human-controlled), the computer
- will randomly choose a winner, the same case occurs if the two characters are
- computer-controlled. However, if the fights is between a human player and a
- computer player, the human player will automatically loses!
-
- Races Information
-
- HUMAN: The human is the standard fighter, being one of the weakest
- combattant, the human compensate that with a good dexterity, a fair hit
- maximum, and the longest reach of all the races. He uses a long sword to
- have a longer reach. On the weak side, he also have one of the worst
- regeneration factor.
-
- LAND OCTOPUS: The land octopus is a four-legged, fish-like creature. It is
- one of the weakest of all (second to human and the same as drider). A
- very-low intelligence, and a poor dexterity. It compensate for that with a
- high hit maximum and a fair regeneration factor. It has a medium reach.
-
- DOG: The dog is a four-footed, fishy-like creature that attacks with its
- poisonous tongue. It is one of the strongest of all, second to the cyclop.
- It is also very dextruous and has a good hit maximum. However, it
- regenerates very slowly, has a low intelligence, and a short reach.
-
- OSTRICH: The dummest of them all, the ostrich is a giant bird, tallest than
- the man. It is dumb, has a very low hit maximum, and a slow regeneration
- factor. However, its great strengh, its high dexterity and its long reach
- can make it a tough opponent.
-
- ZOMBIE: The zombie is a magically animated undead. It fights with its bare
- hands. It has a high strenght, a fair dexterity, and a very high
- regeneration factor. Its strongest point is its regeneration factor, wich
- cures its wounds at a tremendous rate. The zombie has, however, a very short
- reach and a medium intelligence.
-
- CYCLOP: Fear is the feeling inspired by the strongest of them all: the
- cyclop. Its strength is legendary, it has a great hit maximum, and a fair
- regeneration factor. However, it lacks of intelligence and dexterity. Its
- club gives him a fair reach.
-
- DRIDER: Being cursed by the ancient gods, the drider is half human, half
- spider. It is fairly strong, highly dextrous, and has a high intelligence.
- Its hit maximum is, however, a bit low. Its morning start gives him a fair
- reach. It regenerates slowly.
-
- EYE: The eye is an eyestalk standing on one foot. Its lightning
- bolts are devastating and have a fair reach, it has a great hit
- maximum, and a good regeneration factor. It lacks of dexterity
- and intelligence.

- Black/Red/Orange/Green. Running SETUP.EXE and selecting EGA/VGA will put the
- palette back to Black/Bright Cyan/Red/White.
- The default control will be set to keyboard if you have no
